Servite Scholar-Athlete of the Week (2/26/19)
Andrew Wyper ’19
Senior
Tennis
GPA: 4.45

Favorite School Subject: My favorite subject has to be history.  I really enjoyed Mr. Van Dyk’s AP US History class last year.  Learning about the origins of the United States and the US government system was really interesting.  Mr. Emparan’s Ancient Modern Warfare class has intrigued me with its heavily history based curriculum and entertaining/engrossing classroom culture.  History in general is my favorite subject because the past can be utilized to positively influence the outcome of the future.  Learning from the past is pivotal to correct future action, and the key to understanding how society came to its current point is to look back at the past.

How do you balance the academic and athletic rigors here at Servite? The key to my balancing of sports and academics is time management.  Falling prey to procrastination can result in more negative academic results.  I try to manage my time well so that I can do all my academic work and still play well on the tennis court.  I always make sure my academic work gets finished correctly and on time.

What is your go-to study tip for an upcoming exam? When it comes to studying for an upcoming exam, the best study tip or trick I have is to make sure to do as many practice problems as possible.  Practice makes perfect.  Also, day-of-test cram studying works, despite popular belief.

What else are you involved in at Servite? I am heavily involved in the Sanberg International Leadership Program (SILP) and JSA leadership.  SILP led to me different horizons than I would have imagined entering into Servite, but the experience of the program made me a better person.  JSA lets me express a more fun side with political debate and classic Friar camaraderie at the JSA conventions.

What’s your biggest motivation that keeps you striving to be the best student-athlete you can be? My biggest motivation to be the best student-athlete as possible is my own self-motivation and my parents faith in me.  Because I know my parents believe that I can succeed on every level, I push myself to be the best in the classroom and on the tennis court.  I love playing sports, but learning remains just as important to me, probably more important.  My competitive drive is a powerful motivator for me on the tennis court; I strive to succeed at every facet of my life.  In addition, I know that God gives me the strength to become a great student-athlete.
