Servite played in the CIF 3AA Southern Section playoffs and lost in the championship game to Estancia of Costa Mesa in overtime by 2 points, but qualified for the state playoffs and beat Lemoore and Corona Del Mar. Then, the Friars went on to beat Dos Pueblos of Goleta at the L.A. Sports Arena to claim the Division III Southern California Regional championship followed the next week by the state championship game at Oakland Alameda Coliseum. In the championship game, the Friars shot over 70 percent from the field. Steve Marusich ‘90 scored 21 points and didn’t miss a shot. Paul Stapleton ‘90 set a state record at the time with 6 three-point shots and scored 20 points, and Jamie Rosenkranz ’90 added 12 points. It was a close game in the first quarter, but Servite pulled away when Stapleton made 4-three pointers in a short span in the second quarter.
