The Friars were led by guards Chet Chappel ’82 and Tim Osgood ’82, and forwards Steve Krallman ’83 and Andy Marusich ’82, and scored a major upset in a thrilling contest in front of a packed house at Valencia High. Servite relied on a tough zone defense and an offense where each player had a specific role. Their quarterfinal win followed a triple overtime first-round victory against Palos Verde and a second round win over Verbum Dei. The win over Edison was considered the most memorable in more than a decade.
