Wrestling Opens the Season with Victory over Villa Park

After a record-breaking 2019 season, the Fight’n Friars returned to the mat Wednesday night to open their 2020 campaign against Villa Park.

For the second season in a row, the dual pinned the No. 1 (Servite) and No. 2 (Villa Park) teams against each other to vie for the top spot in Orange County to kickoff the year.

The Friars came away with the victory, 47-24 over the Spartans to maintain their rank as the top team in the OC.

The dual started at 106lbs with Julian Espinoza coming back from a 9-0 deficit to get the pin and excite fans from the get go! Villa Park then answered winning three straight matches to open up a 15-6 lead over Servite.

Marcus Medina (132) got the Fight’n Friars back on track rallying to win by decision 7-6 starting a streak of six consecutive matches won by Servite including four pins.

The first of those was Josh Medina (138) followed by Roy Okada (145) and Moises Segura (152). Neil Carter (160) kept it going winning by tech fall before Valor Buck (170) won by fall to put the Friars up 38-15.

Villa Park earned the match victory at 182lbs but Servite responded as Tristen Wilson (195) won by fall at 1:22.

The Spartans won by decision at 220lbs before Bryce Leos (HWT) ended the night with a victory by decision 6-4 to clinch the win for Servite Wrestling.

The Friars return to action this weekend when they compete at the Cossarek Classic hosted by Westminster High School.
