Liam Cronin ’16 announced last week that he will transfer to the University of Nebraska for his senior season. The former Fight’n Friar shared on social media, “Excited to announce that I will be a Husker for my final year of eligibility! Pumped to be a part of such a great team. Thank you to Indiana Wrestling, my former teammates and coaches for supporting me through this decision. 2021 NCAA Champ! #allgasnobreaks”
Cronin had a breakout junior campaign at Indiana finishing 5th at the Big West Championships to qualify for the 2020 NCAA Championships which due to COVID-19 was subsequently canceled. The Hoosiers’ 125lb wrestler went 17-13 overall winning 11 of his last 13 matches including eight in a row and multiple over ranked opponents.
In addition, Cronin won the 2019 U23 National Championship for Greco-Roman at 55 kg.
A three-year varsity letterman at Servite, Cronin finished his high school career with an impressive list of accolades including All-American, OC Register Wrestler of the Year, OCWCA Wrestler of the Year and Trinity League Wrestling of the Year. He was a 2x State Runner-up, 2x Masters Placer, 2x CIF Placer, 3x League Placer, 2x Orange County All-Star and a member of the California Dream Team. He won seven tournament titles while being named Lower Weight MVP three times. He was also a 4x OC Register Athlete of the Week.
In addition he was a member of four CIF Championships teams, two CIF Runner-up teams and two Trinity League championship teams as well as the 2015 OCWCA Team of the Year.
Off the Servite mats, Cronin was a 3x Junior Fargo Greco All-American, a 3x Junior Fargo Freestyle All-American and a USA Folkstyle Nationals All-American. He also won the CA USA Wrestling Folkstyle State Championship, Junior Fila World Cup Championship, Judo Regional Championship and the California State Duals going a perfect 11-0.
