Water Polo earned the No. 3 seed in the Division 3 playoffs and will open postseason action today on the road against Troy High School at 5pm. The Friars finished the regular season with a 17-9 overall record to earn an at-large berth and the opportunity to compete for a CIF title. Troy won the Freeway League Championship with a 15-11 season record.
Servite advanced to the semifinals a season ago and returned eight varsity players and five starters to the 2018 squad. This season the Friars won the Hank Vellekamp Tournament early on to set the tone for the year then finished 4th in the Trinity League earning wins over JSerra and St. John Bosco. They also competed in the South Coast and Steve Pal Tournaments and recorded non-league victories over Edison, Redondo, Montebello, Buena Park and Fountain Valley.
The Friars are led by returning All-CIF and All-League selections Guillermo Ocasio, Christian Martinez and Jack Dunbar as well as goalkeeper Matthew Kuehl. Fellow starters Peyton Carey, Jack Peterson and Jackson Williams have also contributed on both sides of the ball while Ben Teske, Tommy Lien and Evan Serynek have emerged as great options for Servite off the bench.
Los Osos enters playoff action as the No. 1 seed followed by Northwood at No. 2. Both finished as second place teams in their respective leagues to earn home games. Looking ahead for the No. 3 Friars, if they earn an opening round win, they will play the winner of the Malibu/Crescenta Valley matchup. Malibu currently sits at 24-4 overall after tying for 1st in the Citrus Coast League. For the full bracket visit the CIF SS website here.
