Members of the Servite Men’s Choir were asked to share their favorite memory of singing the Salve Regina for a recent assignment whether it be in Mass, at a sporting event, Formation Weekend or at a funeral.

Mrs. Renee Cahill, Director of Choral Music for Servite, passed along some of her student’s answers sharing, “The responses were heartwarming to say the least. It’s a strong reminder to all of us of why it’s so important to keep this Servite tradition alive.”

She added, “During this time of uncertainty I’ve encouraged our men to reach out to music, listen to new genres and find positive music that can help give them peace, comfort and joy. Let the Salve Regina always be a memory of strength in numbers and the brotherhood that is Servite.”

Mass

  • “My favorite memory of hearing the Salve was my freshman year at our first all-school Mass. I was so taken aback when the whole school was singing it because it sounded great and like nothing I had ever heard before at any Mass.” – Jack Terrones ’20

  • “My favorite memory of singing the Salve Regina was my first Mass at Servite. At this Mass when singing the Salve, I felt a sense of brotherhood that I never felt before.” – Joshua Blanco ’23

Athletics

  • “My favorite memory of hearing the Salve was after my first varsity football game. I don’t know what it was but I felt accomplished and I felt that God had my back no matter what.” – Karrington Dennis ’20
  • “My favorite memory of singing the Salve Regina was when we got back to Servite after winning the CIF Final. The whole team, coaches, families, and friends all gathered around the statue of Mary and sang the Salve. This moment will be one of my Servite memories I will never forget.” – Lex Leathem ’20
  • “My favorite memory of singing the Salve was at this year’s basketball game at OLU. Servite won and after the Asylum sang the Salve. I really liked this because it brought us back down to earth, from the high of winning, and helped us remember that we are here for Christ and Christ only. It also deepened the brotherhood that many of us were already feeling.” – Luke Ramirez ’20
  • “The Salve Regina is such an important song to me. It encapsulates the Servite experience as we sing for our mother who sat at the foot of the cross. My favorite memory of the Salve would have to be when we sang it in the locker room after winning the league championship. I almost broke down into tears when we were singing it.” – Sean Oliu ’20

Funeral

  • “The most memorable time I’ve sung the Salve Regina was at the Krebs’ mother’s funeral. What I think made it special was the fact that it was outside of school. We had the day off and easily could’ve stayed home and slept in but to see hundreds of students lining the walls in support of their brother was something special.” -Kieran Looney ’20
  • “I think my favorite memory of singing the Salve, although a sad one, was at the Lutfi  funeral. It was very impactful for me to see Servite men gather for their brother in need.” – Ethan Gutierrez ’20
