Seniors and Sports Medicine II students Adrian Pluma, Zachary Haarlammert and Noah Savellano attended the OC Concussion Consortium earlier this week along with Servite Athletic Trainer Sara Wilson.
With concussion prevention and protocol continuing to be a hot topic for athletes of all ages, Tuesday’s event served as a great opportunity for students to hear from featured speaker and industry leader Ben Strack. He shared insight on concussions and mental health pulling from his experience as a clinical and sports psychologist.
In addition to their academic work in the classroom, Servite’s Sports Medicine Program focuses on field work as well, giving students the opportunity to apply techniques they learn while assisting certified athletic trainers. Sports Med I students observe one sporting event per season while second-year students assist in the athletic training room and at practices and games for an average of 15 hours per week.
Servite’s student Sports Medicine program was developed by current athletic trainer and teacher, Beth Ochoa.
The OC Concussion Consortium is a network of health care providers who are committed to providing whole-person care for patients/clients after head injury. This group meets bi-annually to discuss practice considerations, updates in standards of care for head injuries, and collaborative problem-solving to address the needs of individuals after concussion.
