Noah Avinger ’21 has committed to play football at San Diego State University. The Friars’ defensive back told 247Sports, “I’m very exited about my decision. There were a lot of reasons why I picked San Diego State. It’s close to home and my family can come up and see me anytime. That was a big factor for sure and played a major role.”

He went on to say, “I also have a great relationship with the coaching staff there. They’re great coaches and great people and I feel like they can develop and help me reach my ultimate goal, which is to play in the NFL. You look at their track record for developing defensive backs and specifically corners, they do a great job there and I really feel they have the staff that can help me get there as well.”

It will be a family affair in San Diego as his brother Lucky also plays football for the Aztecs while his sister Asia (Rosary ’20) was recently recruited to play basketball.

Before ultimately deciding on SDSU, Avinger held offers from more than 10 schools including Oregon, Washington State, Oregon State, BYU, Kansas and more.

A three-year varsity letterman for Servite, Avinger is a 2x 1st Team All-Trinity League selection while being awarded All-Orange County recognition following his junior campaign. He was also recently named a Sports Illustrated All-American candidate, one of the top Class of 2021 recruits in Orange County and one of the top 100 players in the state in his class by CalHi Sports.

Coach Troy Thomas shared, “Noah has been a great player on the field but an even better person off the field. He has represented Servite in a great way academically, socially, spiritually and obviously athletically. We are excited to see Noah continue to excel at San Diego State!”

In addition to football, Avinger also runs track for the Friars competing individually in the 100, 200 and 400 in addition to running in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

Avinger is the second football player from his class to commit to playing collegiately joining Shancco Matautia who is headed to Idaho State.

In closing, Avinger shared, “I would like to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity because without Him nothing is possible. I would like to thank my Mom, Dad and family for the countless hours they’ve given up for me throughout my whole life because without them I would not be the young man I am today.” He continued, “I would like to thank all the coaches throughout my youth and high school career for everything they have taught me throughout this process and helping me become the best version of myself. Lastly, I would like to thank all the coaches for recruiting me and trusting me throughout this process.”

Servite would like to wish Noah the best of luck as he competes in his senior season come January of 2021 and as he moves on to play at SDSU!
