Senior Mike Hurst has committed to play football at Portland State. The Friars’ defensive back shared, “I chose Portland State because it was a place that I felt like I would be able to thrive academically and physically on the field. At Portland State the coaches and players embraced me and my family and made it feel like home.” He continued, “What attracted me to the program was Coach Fry. The phone call I had with him when he offered me was a dream come true; he truly believed in me and had faith in me academically and in my physical talents. To me, a coach trusting in you is huge and greatly impacted my decision.”

A three-year varsity letterman for Servite football, Hurst earned All-Trinity League recognition his senior season while also being selected an Orange County All-Star! Throughout his career he tallied 60 tackles and one interception having played in 18 games for the Friars. He also helped lead the team to the 2021 CIF-SS D1 Championship.

Head Coach Troy Thomas shared, “I am so proud of the growth that I have seen in Mike as a person and a player.  The success that he has had is not by chance.  He has bought in and worked extremely hard to become a great leader and player.”

Hurst is the seventh player from the talented senior class to announce his college decision and the first Friar to go on to play for the Vikings.

In closing Hurst shared, “First of all, I would like to thank my parents for sacrificing their money, time, and energy to help build my future. I love you guys unconditionally and will continue to make you guys proud. Second of all, I would like to thank all my coaches from youth to high school. The impact you have all had on my life is something I will keep with me forever. Thank you for treating me as family and supporting me throughout the years.”

Hurst is one of nine student-athletes representing five sports that will be recognized on campus during Signing Day on February 2nd.
