In 2009, Servite Golf had a perfect season. The Friars were the top-ranked team in the county for the majority of the season and finished 23-0 after shooting a course-record 169 in the regular-season finale at Western Hills. Servite won the South Regional and advanced to the team final where the Friars defeated Santa Barbara by a stroke to win the Southern championship. Coach Dane Jako was named Boys Golf Coach of the Year by the Orange County Register and Patrick Cantlay ’10 was named Player of the Year. It seemed like a “once-in-a-lifetime” season, but was followed by a second. In the 2010 season, the Friars won their second consecutive CIF-Southern Section team championship and Cantlay became the first-ever Servite golfer to win the state individual championship. He was named the Register’s co-Athlete of the Year. Cantlay went on to play at UCLA before going professional. He took an extended break from competition to recover from a back injury and the loss of his longtime friend and caddy, Christopher Roth ’09 who died in a tragic car accident. In 2017, he won the Shriners Open in Las Vegas to record his first PGA tournament win.
