Servite upsets #1 ranked Mater Dei 50 – 49 before a packed house at Cypress College and went on to win the 1991 CIF Championship in Division 3A. Eddie Rubio ’92 hit two free throws with four seconds left to seal the win. Mater Dei Coach McKnight said the difference in the game was Servite’s ability to control the tempo. The Friars’ half-court game, led by Rubio, Adam Anderson ‘92, Dan Coady ‘91 and Matt Kenney ‘92, frustrated the Monarchs’ defense.
