Steve Buechele ’79 prepares to hit in 1978 Baseball championship game against Arcadia.

Mike Witt ’78 was the ace of the pitching staff. Steve Buechele ’79 was the leader on the field. All nine starters went on to play college or pro baseball. Witt and shortstop/pitcher Steve Buechele became solid major leaguers. Witt didn’t lose a game in two seasons, compiling a record of 21-0. He threw a three-hitter against Arcadia in the Southern Section 4-A Division championship game, with the Friars winning 6-1. That title is the only baseball championship Servite has won. But 40 years later, that 24-3 Servite squad is considered by many to be the best high school baseball team to come out of Orange County.
