Senior Derek Fuentes has committed to play football at Chapman University. The Friars’ running back said, “I believe that a small school setting, like that of Chapman, is the right fit because it will allow me to connect with others easily and build valuable relationships that will last a lifetime. I also find that having a similar setting, like that of Servite, will help me get to know the faculty and build relationships with them that can help me grow as an individual and help me excel in my choice of studies.”

He went onto say, “Moreover, I believe that a community that ‘fosters creative thinking and expression in all perspectives’ can help me be successful when I transition out into the workforce as we are called to be problem solvers that can help change the world in a way that benefits other people. I find the idea of serving others particularly important because it helps give purpose to my studies and my life. I look forward to being at a school like Chapman that cultivates that environment.”

Fuentes was specifically attracted to the football program because he saw the opportunity to continue to develop as both an athlete and young man. He shared, “The love and support the Chapman staff has given me throughout the recruiting process has shown me that I won’t just be a number on the team but a player that can make an impact.”

A three-year varsity letterman for the Friars, Fuentes was selected to the Curia his senior season while being recognized 1st Team All-Trinity League following his junior campaign. Although he battled injuries throughout his career, he was diligent in working hard to return to his team and make the most of his high school experience. Overall, he rushed for 757 yards on 156 carries with seven touchdowns.

Coach Troy Thomas shared his excitement saying, “Derek has been a pleasure to coach over the past two years and has worked so hard to earn this opportunity. He is a true Friar and there is no doubt he will represent Servite nation well at Chapman University.”

Fuentes, who plans to study Health Sciences in college, is also involved with Track and Field and the Priory program at Servite while volunteering in the community at Meadow Green Elementary and St. Bruno’s Church.

Fuentes is one of nine football players from the class of 2020 to commit to playing collegiately and will join two fellow Friars at Chapman in Lucas Alberty ’18 and David Cooper ’19.

In closing, Fuentes shared, “I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for pushing me to be the player and person I am today. After my second meniscus surgery, I thought that my career in football was coming to an end. However, I continued to work as hard as possible to get back onto the field, and if it wasn’t for the support and love I received I wouldn’t be in this position. I am truly thankful, from the bottom of my heart, for my family, friends and coaches.”

Servite would like to congratulate Derek and wish him the best as he takes the next steps in his academic and athletic career.
