Your Fight’n Friars are CIF Champions once again! Finishing with 324 team points, Servite took the top spot at this weekend’s CIF Central Division Championships besting St. John Bosco (247.5) & Victor Valley (201). In total, the Friars finished with 11 Masters qualifiers & five CIF champions!
Servite also completed the trifecta for the first time in school history winning Trinity League, the CIF-SS Dual Meet Championship and the CIF-SS Central Division Championship all in one season! In 2014 they won league and CIF, finishing as runner-ups at the CIF Dual Meet then in 2015 they won both CIF titles but took 2nd in league.
The Fight’n Friars also set a new CIF record for most team points amassed in a CIF tournament while breaking Servite’s record for most CIF Champions in one year with five. In 2015, the Friars had three- Noah Blakely-Beanes (126), JJ Reed (145) and Kyle Paterson (220).
This year’s CIF Champions included Marcos Magaña (126), Josh Medina (132), Teddy Okada (138), Neil Carter (170) and Tristen Wilson (195). Medina and Okada also shared Lower Weight CIF MVP honors with Wilson being named Upper Weight CIF MVP! All three MVP selections cruised to the finals before clinching the title in dominating fashion.
Overall, Medina finished with four falls and one major decision while Okada tallied three falls, one tech fall and one major decision. Okada also set the new single season takedown record for Servite with 183 surpassing his former training partner and Fight’n Friar great Liam Cronin ’16 who posted 170 his senior season.
Wilson was also a deserving MVP recipient recording five falls, all in the first period, with three pins coming in under 30 seconds!
Marcos Magaña (126) and Neil Carter (170) rounded out the title efforts for the Friars with both wrestlers earning redemption in their championship matches. After finishing as runner-ups at league, Magaña defeated Mater Dei 11-7 and Carter bested St. John Bosco 12-8 in the finals in two thrilling matches.
Other masters qualifiers included CIF runner-ups Andrew Silva (113) and Daniel Magaña (145), 3rd place finishers Marcus Medina (120), Valor Buck (152) and Ayden Matheney (HWT) and 5th place medal winner Roy Okada (160). In addition, Chris Flores took 7th at 182lbs.
The road to state continues this weekend when wrestling competes at the Masters Tournament Friday and Saturday at Cerritos College.
