Servite Wrestling competed at the CIF Masters Tournament this weekend at Sonora High School, the final qualifier on the road to state.
The Fight’n Friars finished with six placers to bring home the Masters Team Runner-Up title.
Valor Buck won Servite’s first Masters title since 2011 taking the victory at 170lbs while Tristen Wilson (195) took 2nd, Josh Medina (138) finished 3rd, Marcus Medina (132) and Roy Okada (152) placed 5th while Neil Carter (160) rounded out the qualifiers for the Friars taking 9th.
As the No. 1 seed, Buck sailed to the finals winning both of his day one matches by fall then was forfeited to in his quarterfinals and semifinals match before defeating Valencia by decision to finish the tournament as a Masters Champion. For his efforts he was also awarded Upper Weight MVP recognition.
A two-time Masters finalist, punched his return ticket to the championship match winning a thrilling semifinal battle by fall. Down 8-0, Wilson turned the tables on Dana Hills getting the takedown and pin bringing the crowd to their feet. Wilson then dropped a close contest 6-4 to the No. 1 seed to finish 2nd.
Fellow senior Josh Medina also wrestled a great tournament to take 3rd overall. Medina lost a controversial semifinal bout to the No. 1 seed 3-2 in the final seconds then battled back to earn a spot in the 3rd place match winning by decision 12-6 over Temecula Valley.
Rounding out the qualifiers were Marcus Medina and Roy Okada who will make their first trip to state while Carter along with Buck, Wilson and Medina are headed to state for the second time!
State competition starts Thursday in Bakersfield and will run through Saturday night. Best of luck to all our Fight’n Friars.
