Winter sports had a tremendous season with multiple teams winning championships giving Friar fans and the Asylum a lot to cheer about.
Soccer won their seventh consecutive Trinity League title and their first CIF-SS Division 1 Championship since 2015 defeating Loyola 2-1 in the finals. As a result, Coach Jon Spencer was named CIF and OC Register Coach of the Year while senior David Mitzner earned CIF Player of the Year honors with fellow senior Uriel Sanchez being named OC Register Player of the Year. In addition, ten players were recognized All-League with two earning MVP accolades, four were named All-CIF and four All-Orange County.
Wrestling continued their dominance concluding the season as the No. 1 team in Orange County yet again. The Fight’n Friars finished as CIF-SS Dual Meet, CIF-SS Central Division and CIF Masters Runner-Ups while placing 10th at the CIF State Meet. Individually, four wrestlers won Trinity League titles, seniors Valor Buck (170lbs) and Tristen Wilson (195lbs) won CIF-SS Championships and Buck won the Friars’ first Masters Championship since 2011! Buck, Wilson and Josh Medina also placed at state for the second time in each of their respective careers and were three of the eight Servite wrestlers to finish in the top five in the county rankings.
Basketball finished the season No. 4 in the CIF-SS Div 3AA polls after being ranked in the top five the entire year. The Friars took 4th in Trinity League play with a 17-11 overall record, tied for the most wins in a season since 2013. Two players were recognized with All-Trinity League honors while sophomore Tajavis Miller was selected 1st Team All-CIF and 1st Team All-Orange County, highly-esteemed recognitions.
Club sports Hockey and Rugby also had monumental seasons, quite possibly two of the best in the respective programs histories.
Hockey won the ADHSHL Commissioners Cup Championship defeating Capistrano United 2-0 in the finals! The no. 9 seed in the tournament, the Friars had a cinderella story run to the championship topping the 6, 3, 2 and 1 seeds to become the lowest seed in league history to take home the title! Previously, the Friars defeated Carlsbad, Orange Lutheran and Villa Park to earn a spot in the championship game. Individually, senior Preston Patz was selected to the Division 3 All-ADHSHL Team in addition to being selected to play in the all-star game.
Rugby won their first Orange County League Championship in school history going undefeated with a perfect 4-0 record. The Friars then advanced through the playoff bracket finishing 2nd at the So Cal Youth Rugby Championships after earning victories over Corona Centennial and La Jolla to punch their ticket to the finals. As finalists, the team also advanced the California State Rugby Championship while finishing in the top 20 in the national rankings!
