Servite High School PAL students held a “White Out Drugs” week, to focus on preventing alcohol and drug use and encouraging current users to quit. In preparation for this event, PAL members designed a t-shirt to promote substance abuse prevention and sold them to fellow students. PALs posted White Out Drugs posters throughout the school, which included a referral line number. They also gave daily announcements focusing on substance abuse prevention.
During White Out Drugs week, PAL students hosted a presentation of a former addict who discussed his struggles with drugs and how he turned his life around. After the presentation, PAL students led discussions in homerooms, reaching all Servite students. Some questions included: What did you think about what the speaker said and what did you learn? How can you avoid drugs and alcohol and change your future? How can you help your peers make the choice not to use drugs or alcohol and lead them to a better future?
Servite PAL peer leaders recognize that substance abuse prevention is an ongoing issue; therefore, they encourage students to wear their White Out Drugs shirts on “White Out Wednesdays” and host activities to remind students about the issue. Servite PALs feel that the ongoing Wednesday event keeps the message at the forefront.
