Recent graduate Tyler “Roy” Okada ’21 has signed to wrestle at Waldorf University in Iowa. The Friars’ team captain shared, “Initially I wasn’t all that familiar with the school but when Head Coach Ryan Dickinson reached out and told me about the wrestling program and school’s academics I was instantly interested.”
A four-year varsity letterman, Okada is a 3x All-Trinity League wrestler and member of the Friars’ 2019 and 2021 Trinity League Championships teams. Individually, he placed at CIF both his sophomore and junior years while advancing to Masters then State in 2020. Senior season he returned to State although he was forced to take a different path due to the cancellations in postseason competition due to COVID-19. After finishing the regular season with a top 24 ranking, he earned a State berth and finished 3rd overall at 145lbs. Okada was also a member of the Fight’n Friars 2019 Masters Championship and both CIF-SS Championships squads.
Okada’s accolades don’t stop there, he is also a Freestyle State Champion and 2x Greco State Champion as well as an All-American at Greco Junior Nationals and a member of Freestyle California.
Coach Alan Clinton shared, “Roy made the most of his opportunity to wrestle this year and earned this chance to continue his wrestling career at the next level. In a year that brought endless challenges, he stayed the course, worked tirelessly and remained dedicated to his craft. We couldn’t be prouder of the way he led this team in a year of such uncertainty and look forward to seeing the impact he will make at Waldorf. Go Warriors!”
Okada, who plans to study Kinesiology at Waldorf, is also a sensei and helps coach judo at Servite weekly.
Okada joins a long list of Servite wrestlers to move on to compete at the collegiate level becoming the 10th Fight’n Friar in the last four years to sign to play the next level.
