During the past week and a half, the formation department took the sophomores, through their English classes, over to the facilities yard where they got a demonstration from Mr. Virola and Mr. Robertson (who owned an auto shop for over 30 years). Students were shown some of the essentials, such as:
- How to check/maintain tire pressure
- How to change a tire in an emergency using the tools that come with the car
- How to jump start a car
- How/where to check basic fluids
We recommended to them that the first thing they should do is call for roadside assistance and that the demonstrations were just to help familiarize them in case they were ever in a situation where the couldn’t get help. We encouraged them to talk with you when they start driving about where their spare tire/equipment is located and how they would go about changing it in case of emergency. You may have already done so but it might be a good bonding moment to actually practice changing a tire with your sons on the car they will be driving. Its something that I wish I would have known about my car when I started driving and would help make sure your sons are as prepared as possible.
In addition we talked about basic steps in what to do if they ever get into a car accident. I would hope they never have to find themselves in that situation but we encouraged them to talk with you about this process as well to make sure they are clear on the steps they would need to take.
