The Friars’ 1990 State Championship Basketball team was inducted into the Servite Hall of Fame last night during a ceremony held at halftime.
They brought home the CIF Division III State title after defeating Mt. Eden of Hayward 67-51 on March 17, 1990.
In the championship game held at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum, the Friars shot over 70 percent from the field. Steve Marusich ‘90 scored 21 points and didn’t miss a shot. Paul Stapleton ‘90 set a state record at the time with six three-point shots and scored 20 points, and Jamie Rosenkranz ’90 added 12 points. It was a close game in the first quarter, but Servite pulled away when Stapleton made four-three pointers in a short span in the second quarter.
Leading up to the state playoffs, Servite finished as CIF-SS Division IIIAA Runner-Ups earning a regionals berth. The Friars then defeated Lemoore and Corona Del Mar on route to the Division III Southern California Regional championship where they topped Dos Pueblos of Goleta at the L.A. Sports Arena to claim the title.
The 1990’s Basketball team joins three other Servite teams in the Hall of Fame including the 1960 Football team, 1978 Baseball team and 1982 Football team.
