Servite Athlete of the Week
Marcos Magaña ’19 and Neil Carter ’20
Wrestling
It was a thrilling week for the Servite Wrestling program with the Fight’n Friars advancing 11 wrestlers to Masters and finishing with five CIF-SS Individual Champions, including our two co-athletes of the week, senior Marcos Magaña (126) and junior Neil Carter (170).
Magaña, the two seed, and Carter, the seven seed, both avenged earlier season losses and defeated higher ranked wrestlers on their way to the title.
Magaña started the tournament strong with back-to-back falls against Highland and Silverado then won his quarterfinal match by tech fall 19-3 over Victor Valley. He then tallied his third pin of the tournament over Shadow Hills to clinch a spot in the finals against the No. 1 seed and familiar foe, Joey McLaughlin of Mater Dei. After finishing as runner-up in league, Magaña came away with the victory this time around winning by decision 11-7.
For Carter, he faced the one, two and three seeds in the bracket topping the No. 2 ranked wrestler from Santa Fe by fall at 4:58 in the quarters to advance and face the No. 3 seed from Lakewood in the semifinals. He won that match by major decision, 18-7 sending him to the finals against No. 1 ranked Miguel Beltran from St. John Bosco to set up a rematch of the Trinity League Finals. This time, Carter came away victorious after a back-and-forth overtime match, 12-8.
Both wrestlers as well as Servite’s nine other Masters qualifiers will compete this weekend at the final stop on the road to state! Action starts Friday at Cerritos College.
