On October 14th, Servite High School proudly recognized Dr. Ben Rubin for nearly 40 years of exemplary service to the care and treatment of student-athletes by dedicating its sports medicine center in his name.

The new Dr. Ben Rubin Sports Medicine Center is nearly triple in size from the previous sports medicine area with 1,100 square feet. It has a trainer’s office for the evaluation of student-athletes, training and taping tables, and rehabilitation equipment. It brings Servite into the 21st century of treating and caring for student injuries.

After completing a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles in 1979, Dr. Rubin moved to Orange County where he became the team physician at Servite, and eventually became a founding member of Orthopedic Specialty Institute (OSI).

Dr. Ben Rubin alongside his wife Judy cut the ceremonial athletic tape to signify the opening of Servite’s new sports medicine center.

Dr. Rubin quickly became a part of the Servite community. He is an accomplished physician who has also been the voice of encouragement for students. He often talked with students about the importance of good relationships with others, and God.

Outside of his devotion to his wife of 37 years, Judy, daughter Alyson and grandsons, working as Servite team physician has been an integral part of Dr. Rubin’s life. He was always there for students and their families to celebrate their joys and comfort them in their sorrows. Many former patients, families, and coaches became his lifelong friends.

“As a proud mom of Servite student-athletes, I’m quite familiar with the legacy of caring Dr. Ben Rubin has imprinted on the fabric of the school, and the confidence he has instilled in the athletes who know they are in good hands when they see him on the sidelines,” said Jennifer Mitzner, CEO of Hoag Orthopedic Institute, a hospital at which Dr. Rubin practices. “He treats his patients like family, and that ethos has had a ripple effect with his peers, as well as the next generation of clinicians who have trained under him.”

Athletic Director Alan Clinton and Associate Athletic Director Joel Hartmann were among the tribute speakers at the dedication ceremony. “Servite is deeply grateful for the outstanding care and treatment of student-athletes by Dr. Rubin,” said Alan Clinton, Athletic Director. “Servite is proud to have a part of its facilities named in honor of such an exemplary physician and caring individual.”

The new Dr. Ben Rubin Sports Medicine Center is nearly triple in size from the previous sports medicine area with 1,100 square feet.

“Dr. Rubin possesses that rare combination of being a highly skilled surgeon with exemplary bedside manner,” said Associate Athletic Director Joel Hartmann. “If you were blessed to be a patient of his, you always felt like you were being cared for as if you were a family member.”

Originally from the Bronx, New York, Dr. Rubin earned his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and his Master of Science at Jefferson Medical College. He interned at the University of Texas at Houston, and completed Orthopedic Residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Dr. Rubin is the founder of the Sports Medicine Committee of U.S.A. Diving and was the Diving Team physician for the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games.

“I am proud, I am humbled, I am honored and I am blessed that the Servite family thinks enough of me to put my name on the new Sports Medicine Center,” said Dr. Rubin.

Thank you, Dr. Rubin, for your gift of service and for the way you cared for our student-athletes.
