Servite Scholar-Athlete of the Week (10/8/18)
Christian Oviedo
Senior
Football / Volleyball
GPA: 4.00
Favorite School Subject: My favorite subject in school is English Literature. I love the way that words are able to tell a story about a person, place, or idea by simply being on the page. But I also love how those exact same words, even if written about something odd, give you insight to the person that wrote them down in the first place.
How do you balance the academic and athletic rigors here at Servite? Being a student and two-sport athlete at Servite while playing on a club team outside of school forces me to manage my time as efficiently as possible. It is not easy and takes a bit of planning ahead. The faculty at Servite have been very helpful in making themselves available at different times and my coaches are aware of our high academic expectations. I am able to finish a bit of work at break or lunch and do a little at a time between practices. Also, it’s important to eat well to make sure I have enough energy to get everything done.
What is your go-to study tip for an upcoming exam? My go-to study tip would be to make FLASHCARDS.
What else are you involved in at Servite? I am part of the Student Ambassador Program, Lector Reading (for mass), Ping Pong Club, Spike Ball Club, the With Hope Club (dealing in stopping suicide) and a member of the Volleyball team.
What’s your biggest motivation that keeps you striving to be the best student-athlete you can be? I want to represent my school to the best of my ability and make my family proud. I don’t want to look back and wish I would have done something different. I try my best to be an example to others by working hard and helping lead our team to get as far as we can. I’ve been fortunate enough to play against some of the best athletes in the county, state, and nation, but it has been my teammates who have driven me to perform at the highest levels.
Current Courses: Calculus, AP Environmental Science, AP Government, English, Film, Theology
