Mildred Roche was one of the first women teachers hired at Servite in 1962. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Cal State Long Beach. She taught Modern and AP European history for 33 years as well as English. She was moderator of the Speech and Debate Club. Besides her love of history and great respect for ancient civilizations and their contributions which laid the foundations for succeeding cultures and civilizations to build upon, Mildred loved to discuss current events and political issues. The late 1960s and ‘70s were notable for social, political and cultural upheaval. She made it a point to engage students in politics and the heady issues of the day which were being debated between the generations. Virtue, compassion for the less fortunate, a call to service – these were themes Mildred stressed to students whether in ancient times or modern day.
