Cinderella's Family

Name: Juliana Maldonado
School: Rosary Academy ‘20
Role: Lucinda

Briefly tell us about your role:
Throughout Act I the audience will find that Lucinda is not the classic evil step sister, but she is more envious than jealous of Cinderella. She is also deemed more of the younger& oblivious sibling who follows what her sister and mother do. And nearing the end of Act I Lucinda is the one to get her heel cut off for she is kind of second choice of who her mother wants to marry the prince.

How are you preparing for your specific role?
To prepare for this role I am watching a conversation piece with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine who talk about character motives so I can get a better view on how to portray Lucinda and making choices with my “sister” to help better my portrayal.

What is your favorite song from the show?
My favorite song from the show would have to be hands down the first part “Children Will Listen” in the finale.

Can you share a favorite Tri-School memory?
My favorite Tri-School memory so far would have to be singing the overture for “Bye Bye Birdie” in the pit.

Favorite subject in school/Favorite teacher?

There is a tie between history and English for my favorite subject. And I really don’t have a favorite teacher because they are all so amazing!

If you aren’t performing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy going to the beach and or sleeping.

If someone could play YOU in the movie of your life, who would it be?
I honestly have no clue who could or even would play me in a movie of my life.

What are you excited for audiences to see in “Into the Woods”?
I am super excited to for the audience to see the opening act for “Into the Woods” because it is in my opinion one of the hardest pieces but the most fun for the audience to see.

Anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to thank my family, friends, and especially Mr. Marrone and Mrs. Kasang for providing constant support and advice throughout everything!!

Name:
Tiffany Lubrino
School & Grade: Cornelia Connelly High School, Senior
Role: Florinda
Briefly tell us about your role:
Hello! My role is Florinda. She is the obnoxious, self-centered, and pretty stepsister of Cinderella. She desperately wants to meet the prince at the ball and spends most of her time with her sister, Lucinda.
How are you preparing for your specific role?
I am preparing for my specific role by watching different versions of the classic Cinderella story: the Rodgers and Hammerstein, the Grimm story, the Original Broadway Cast of “Into the Woods” and of course, the Disney version. By doing this research, I closely learn how the stepsisters are being portrayed in each version. I also ask myself some specific questions about Florinda’s backstory such as: what is her dynamic relationship between her sister, Lucinda, stepsister, Cinderella, and her mother? Or why does the music sound like this as my character?

What is your favorite song from the show?

My favorite song from the show is “No One Is Alone” in Act II. That song makes me emotional internally every time I hear that song because it represents unity as a community and in our families. I am very close with my parents and family, and this song reminds me to be thankful for the great gift of them.

Can you share a favorite Tri-School memory?

Well, my first show with Tri-School memory was Grease back in 2015 (and its 2018 now, what?!) in my Freshman year and my favorite Tri-School memory was doing the dance-filled number called “‘Born to Hand Jive.” I had a lot of fun with that number because it was so fast-paced and I did a lot of swings and lifts with my partner. My favorite Tri-School Theatre memory was watching West Side Story at La Mirada Performing Arts Center, and that show’s music has always been stuck in my head.

Favorite subject in school/Favorite teacher?

My favorite subject in school would have to be Honors Precalculus because even though most people do not like math, I like memorizing different trigonometric identities at the class itself. My favorite teacher(s) are Mrs. Toomey for Studio Art and Mrs. Morris for English IV because I love how they teach it makes it so interesting and I love talking with them. Also, shoutout to Mr. Marrone for being an awesome theatre teacher and director.

Are you involved in anything outside of Tri-School?
Yes I am! I am the Co-President of Advanced Women’s Ensemble Choir and I sing every Saturday as a lead cantor at my local church, Saint Justin Martyr for nine years. I am also involved in Connelly’s Ambassador Program for potential Connelly students and one of the board members for National Honors Society.

If you aren’t performing, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
If I am not performing, I would be taking care of my precious and cutest dogs: Scarlett and Snowie, listening to showtunes, hanging out with friends, or watching Netflix such as patiently waiting for the next Stranger Things: Season Three.

If someone could play YOU in the movie of your life, who would it be?
Hmmm. If someone could play me in the movie of my life, it would have to be Eva Noblezada from the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon because of her Filipino descent (since I am Filipino) and she could sing my entire life through song.

What are you excited for audiences to see in “Into the Woods”?
I am super excited for audience to see in “Into the Woods”! It will be a real treat to watch this show because Tri-School have not done this show since 1998! I super excited for audiences to see the sets and productions since there will many sets moving from left to right especially when it is combined with the difficult music of Sondheim. I am way beyond mind-blown in the talent shown in this cast I am excited for everyone to see our hard work!

Anyone you would like to thank?
I would definitely like to thank for my family especially my mom and dad for letting me audition for this show and also coming back to Tri-School after three years.  I would also like to thank my director, Mr. Marrone and vocal director, Mrs. Kasing for being so helpful teaching me new techniques for acting and singing and for supporting me through every step of the way. Also, a shoutout to the cast members for making me smile every time I walk in for rehearsal 🙂

Name: Joanna Juarez
School & Grade: Connelly, 12th
Role: Stepmother

Briefly tell us about your role: The stepmother is a power and elitist driven woman who wants nothing more than to be royalty and lives that dream (unsuccessfully) through her two daughters Flroinda and Lucinda. She despises her step daughter Cinderella who ironically becomes royalty and the Stepmother, being so tenacious, has no other choice but to come to terms with the predicament. She waits on Cinderella hand and foot as Cinderella once had done for her.

How are you preparing for your specific role? In preparation to take on this role, I have become an avid dramaturg, researching previous renditions of the stepmother, not only in Into The Woods but in the story of Cinderella. I have also been paying close attention to other greedy roles in TV shows and movies and finding the similarities between those characters and finding nuances I can bring to the Stepmother and how I can really make her my own.
What is your favorite song from the show? Ever After has been my favorite song to work on so far. I think there is so much room to show all of the characters’ growth from the beginning to the end of Act 1. That character development is something really special to convey on stage and something the audience will really be captivated by.
Can you share a favorite Tri-School memory? My favorite Tri-School memory has to be waking up super early in the morning to go to a rehearsal for State Festival with Mr. Marrone. Seeing Mr. Marrone with his glasses on and the state of exhaustion we all shared just really speaks a lot about our dedication not only to the program but to our craft and Tri-School.
Favorite subject in school/Favorite teacher? My favorite subject in school is AP Government with Mr. Marshall. It is so fascinating learning about all that America’s youth can be doing to spark a change where we see fit. Mr. Marshall is such a fun teacher and he has inspired and taught me a lot about our responsibility as a well informed citizen.
Are you involved in anything outside of Tri-School? Outside of Tri-School I am an active volunteer at a Kitten Rescue shelter to advocate for animal rights and I also am the yearbook editor in cheif at Connelly.
If you aren’t performing, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time? In my spare time I like to go hiking, watch musicals and travel.
If someone could play YOU in the movie of your life, who would it be? If ANYONE could play me in a movie, I think It would have to be Julia Louis Dreyfus. I think shes absolutely incredible and I definitely think I share some traits with Elaine Benes in regard to her tenacity and loud presence.
What are you excited for audiences to see in “Into the Woods”? I am so excited for audiences to be completely captivated by the strong cast committing to their characters. Our cast is so great and we are being directed so well by Mr. Marrone and Mrs. Kasang and I don’t think for a moment that the audience will be able to take their eyes off the stage. The energy being presented on stage is going to be awesome and I cant wait to send chills throughout the theatre.
Anyone you would like to thank? I have to thank my parents who support me on every endeavor, Mr. Marrone for giving me this opportunity to perform on stage, Mrs. Kasang for all of her incredible musical direction and faith in the cast, and the cast and crew for their hard work and determination.
