Larry Walker began teaching and coaching at Servite in 1967. He became Head Basketball Coach in 1969, a position he held for 20 years. He also taught ancient history and physical education through 2008 and holds the second longest tenure at Servite at 41 years. He led Servite to five Angelus League titles and 14 Southern Section playoff berths. He had a 307-160 record and was named the league’s coach of the year six times. Larry coached some of the top athletes in Orange County history, including Turk Schonert ’75, Mike Witt ’78, Steve Buechele ’79 and Steve Beuerlein ’83. Among the college basketball players he coached were John Seymour ’71, Rich McElrath ’76, Scott ’81 and Jeff Sinek ’79, Steve Krallman ’83 and Brian Kenney ’88. Larry orchestrated one of the biggest upsets in Southern Section playoff history when Servite defeated top-seeded Edison, 58-54, in the 1982 quarterfinals of the 4-A division playoffs. Coach Walker passed away in 2009 at the age of 64.
