Her secret to teaching was helping students to see. Visual arts teacher, Karen Van Metre, began teaching at Servite in 1993 and retired in 2015. She tailored her syllabi to best accommodate students and teach them about important world events. In her drawing class, she taught a unit on the Holocaust. In her painting class, students received photos of third-world orphans and painted pictures of that person which were later sent to the orphans. Her most memorable Servite moments are of seeing students discover their hidden talents, some of whom went onto careers in art and design.
