Servite’s JV Academic Decathlon team took home plenty of hardware at the Orange County Academic Decathlon awards ceremony at Valencia High School on June 4, 2013. In addition to hauling in 15 individual medals, the team itself earned a fifth place award in Division II for the Super Quiz portion of the competition. Super Quiz is a live competition, structured in a similar way to the popular JEOPARDY! program. This year’s JV squad was coached by 2013 graduates Alex Topete and Marc Hepps, as well as junior Sang Woon ‘Ben’ Lee. JV Decathlon pits freshmen and sophomores against each other from more than 30 schools across Orange County. Friar sophomores Ross Yu, Luke Perez, Jon Stewart, Nathan Ong, Matt Hendrickson, Jonathan Kavner, and Garrett Clough joined freshmen Francisco Alvarez, Brandon Martinez, and Luke Fahmy to comprise Servite’s team. Congratulations, decathletes!

The competition involved the study of seven academic areas, plus essay writing, prepared speeches, and Super Quiz, all focused on the topic of Russia. Together with upperclassmen next year, these men will focus on the new theme, World War I. The novel they will read over the summer break is Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises.
