Senior Jared Steins has committed to run cross country and track and field at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Friars’ distance runner shared, “I chose MIT because of its school of engineering, which is devoted to education for practical application, following its “mens et manus” (“mind and hand”) motto. In addition, MIT’s Coach Riley Macon and I got in touch early, so I learned more about the tight-knit team culture and the appeal of running in the Boston area.”

A four-year letterman in both cross country and track and field, Steins graduates as one of the most accomplished distance runners in school history.

In cross country, he earned 1st Team All-Trinity League accolades all four years, being named MVP his junior season. His senior year, he finished as CIF Runner-Up and advanced to the State Tournament, placing 4th.

In track and field, he won four individual Trinity League titles winning the 3200 in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022 while making league history becoming the first athlete to finish 1st in the 800, 1600 and 3200 his senior year. Junior year he went on to finish 3rd at CIF in the 3200 while finishing as a CIF Champion and State qualifier in the 1600 his senior year.

Beyond all the championship accolades, he also holds school records in the 3 mile (14:33), 1600 (4:09.71) and 3200 (9.08.99).

Coach Karson Hayden shared, “Jared is a once in a decade type athlete. He works hard and knows what he needs to do to be successful. He came to Servite ready to work and remained focused and dedicated to accomplishing his goals. We have no doubt that he will carry that mindset to MIT and continue to achieve all he sets out to do.”

Steins, who plans to study Mechanical Engineering at MIT, is also involved in a variety of organizations at Servite including serving as the Vicar General of the Priory Program, the National Honors Society President, the Red Cross Blood Van Coordinator, and a CSF tutor. Outside of Servite, he volunteers with Rising Above Disabilities (RAD) Camp and Boys State. He also enjoys making art. In addition, he is graduating as Servite’s salutatorian.

In closing he added, “Thank you to Coach Hills, Coach Hayden, and Coach Gibbs for always pushing me to reach my goals, to my teammates for being with me every step of the way, and to my family for continuing to support me.”
