Dear Class of 2020,

This is such an uncertain time in our lives. I know this isn’t how you envisioned the end of your senior year or how our season would end. One thing I know about this class is you never took for granted any day you had at Servite. You made the most of every opportunity and those memories will be with you forever. Three words come to mind when thinking about the Class of 2020.

The first word is loyal. You have been loyal to Servite since the day you made the decision to attend our school. For some of you, the loyalty to Servite goes back even earlier. It is not an easy place to go to school, but you have stayed loyal to the process even when at times you might have not understood certain decisions. You have been loyal to your teammates. You supported each other on that very first day of summer camp, without any reason other than they were your teammates. Over the years, your teammates have grown into your brothers and the loyalty is displayed by the selfless love you show for each other on and off the court. Being loyal and showing loyalty to those you love will get you far in life.

The next word I would use to describe you is grit. Grit is an individual’s perseverance of effort combined with the passion for a particular long-term goal. You have each dealt with a variety of setbacks. You overcame every obstacle you encountered whether those were academic, athletic, social or spiritual. Through every obstacle, you have come out of the situation stronger than you were before. You will learn as you get older, life gets more complicated and unfortunately you will continue to experience a variety of setbacks. But I am confident you have what it takes to persevere through those setbacks. Having the grit to continuously push for your goals without taking shortcuts is who each of you are and it is going to allow you to accomplish whatever you set your mind to.

Lastly, you are all leaders. More specifically, this year you have become servant leaders. You have selflessly put the well-being of the team above your own personal aspirations. You have left your impact on the younger players and have set a standard for future senior classes. Each of you are going to go on in life and continue to be the faith-filled leaders this world desperately needs.

No matter where you go in life, don’t forget I am proud of each and every one of you. It has been a blessing to be your coach. You are always welcome back in the Servite gym and will forever be remembered. Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Credo,

Coach Marrujo
