At the end of each calendar year, Servite Athletics presents four special awards to student-athletes who excel in the classroom (Scholar-Athlete of the Year), on the field of play (Athlete of the Year), in the community (Frank Ryan Service Award) and personally (Sherer Courage Award). These awards are given out at our annual Hall of Fame Dinner and All Sports Banquet held at the Orange Hill Restaurant. Recapping the awards, first up the Frank Ryan Service Award.
The Frank Ryan Memorial Service award is presented to a varsity letterman who has gone above and beyond in providing service to his communities while balancing his academic and athletic obligations. This award is named in honor of Frank Ryan who sent nine sons to Servite between 1972 and 1993 and worked diligently to support the Friar community in whatever way possible. He understood the need to serve and searched out opportunities to help, never having to be asked to do anything.
This year’s recipient is Andrew Nguyen. He completed 595 hours of community service with a variety of organizations while competing in tennis as a four-year varsity letterman and carrying a 4.91 GPA. Off campus, he has volunteered with Santa Clara de Asis Catholic Church, Saint Columban Catholic Church, St. Francis Assisi Catholic School, Agape Belize Cure NPO, the Vietnamese Physician Association of Southern California, the Second Harvest Food Bank and Serving Advantage. On campus, he has volunteered with Servite Music Ministry, Jazz Band and the American Red Cross Club.
Some highlights of his service include making masks with Agape Belize Cure during the COVID pandemic, coaching the Academic Decathlon team in math at St. Francis of Assisi, playing accompanying piano for the Saturday Vigil Mass at Santa Clara de Asis Catholi Church and serving as a doubles partner with Serving Advantage.
Academically, he earned Principal’s High Honor Roll with Distinction all four years and will graduate in the top 3 of the Class of 2022.
Athletically, he is a 2x All-Trinity League selection in doubles tennis as well as a member of the 2021 CIF Championship team and the back-to-back Trinity League Championship teams.
At Servite, he also serves on the Generalate as the Treasurer General and is involved with the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation.
He will be moving on to continue his academic career at UCLA.
